Bamako is located in the southwest of Mali, on the Niger River, and is the capital of the West African country Mali. Its name comes from the Bambara language, meaning “crocodile river”. The city is the largest in Mali and serves as the political, economic, transportation, commercial, and cultural center.
Bamako is a city nestled between mountains and waters, with the 480-meter Kolbaba Mountain behind it. The beautiful and tranquil Niger River flows gently from the south of the city, like a peaceful emerald ribbon, dividing Bamako into two parts from west to east. The entire city is centered around Liberty Square, with streets crisscrossing and tall mango trees lining the streets, like being covered with a green canopy. Various small and exquisite buildings in red, brown, yellow, and white colors are hidden among the dense tropical foliage, showcasing a mix of Arab and West African architectural styles, resembling palaces from fairy tales. Popular tourist destinations within the city include the National Museum of Mali, Martyrs’ Bridge, the Great Mosque of Bamako, and the Independence Monument, which are all well worth visiting.
Shopping in Bamako is very convenient, with modern shopping malls, supermarkets, and traditional African markets where you can purchase locally crafted exquisite handicrafts.
