Rusumo Falls is located on the border between Rwanda and Tanzania, on the Kagera River. Although its height is far inferior to other large waterfalls, this waterfall holds a very important place in Rwanda’s history.
Rusumo Falls is the place where a bridge crosses the Kagera River. This waterfall gained worldwide attention in 1994 when the shocking Rwandan Genocide occurred. Thousands of bodies flowed under the bridge, while refugees fled to Tanzania across the bridge. It was because of this reason that it became known to the world. Unlike other waterfalls, Rusumo Falls does not have clear water; the cascading water is yellow, which can be compared to the Yellow River Hukou Waterfall in China to some extent.
