The Ali Qapu Palace, located on the west side of Imam Square, is a 6-story building built in the early 17th century. The name “Ali Qapu” means “Magnificent Gate” and was constructed by Shah Abbas I. Standing at 48 meters tall, the main entrance consists of 6 levels. Each level is adorned with different decorations and features two spiral staircases that are difficult to climb. Every small room has its own unique characteristics. The third level’s “Music Hall” is adorned with 18 wooden columns, a wooden lattice carved ceiling with dazzling decorations and mirrors, presenting a splendid and magnificent sight. A marble and copper water fountain with spraying water columns brings joy to the onlookers. This palace was used by the Safavid kings to entertain foreign ambassadors. The sixth floor houses a music hall and a viewing platform where the king and royal guests could watch polo matches, fireworks displays, review the troops, and entertain dignitaries. Today, it serves as the seat of power and is Iran’s first skyscraper.
