Linz is located in the northeast of Austria, at the center of Europe. It is the capital of Upper Austria, an important river port and economic center on the upper reaches of the Danube River, and also the third largest city in Austria. The city is known for being Austria’s most important heavy industrial city, with the largest steel and chemical companies in Austria located here.
Linz is one of the most charming cities in Austria, proud of its enchanting Renaissance-era buildings and baroque-style lavishly decorated gateways. The liveliest place in the city is the central square, where the sacred Trinity Column stands tall, built in 1723 in gratitude for Linz being spared from the suffering of the plague and wars. To the east of the square is a 16th-century town hall, and strolling along the Cathedral Alley leads to the opulent Baroque New Cathedral built in 1678. The Lentos Art Museum is Linz’s newest art museum, opened in 2003, and it is Austria’s most important modern art museum, housing over 1,500 oil paintings, sculptures, objective works of art, over 10,000 works on paper, and over 850 photographs. The Ars Electronica Center is a relatively new museum specializing in electronic art, featuring diverse exhibitions on a regular basis, which is highly appealing to electronic art enthusiasts.
Linz is a city that makes you feel very comfortable, and one of the most pleasant ways to explore the city is by taking the yellow miniature sightseeing train, the Linz City Express, which takes you through the city’s streets and alleys, allowing you to admire its most iconic buildings.
