Stone Mountain Park, also known as the Stone Mountain State Park, is located east of downtown Atlanta, about a 30-minute drive away. Atlanta was a crucial strategic location in the American Civil War, and there are many related attractions in the area, with the park being one of them. The most famous Civil War-related attraction in the park is the relief carving on the mountain side, depicting the presidents of the Southern Confederacy during the Civil War – Jefferson Davis, the Southern military commander Robert E. Lee, and Stonewall Jackson. The carving was completed in 1972 and is often referred to as the “largest and most spectacular rock carving in the world”. The park also preserves a volcanic dome from the last century and is a popular spot for weekend leisurely walks among Atlanta residents.
