Matanzas is a city on the northern coast of Cuba in the Caribbean Sea, located 32 kilometers east of Havana and to the west of the resort town Varadero, serving as the capital of Matanzas Province. The city was founded in 1572 and is renowned for its poetry, culture, and Cuban black heritage.
Known as the “City of Bridges” and “the Venice of Cuba” due to the presence of seven major bridges, Matanzas also holds the title of “the Athens of Cuba”. The city boasts a variety of tourist destinations, including the Matanzas Province History Museum, the Pharmaceutical Museum established in 1882, the grand San Carlos Borromeo Cathedral, the Cuban national monument Bellamar Caves, and the cemetery of San Carlos. The San Carlos Borromeo Cathedral was founded in 1693 but unfortunately destroyed by a hurricane. The present church was built in 1735, maintaining its previous grand and solemn appearance despite enduring various storms.
