Maracay is located in the central-northern part of Venezuela, near the Caribbean coast. It is the capital and most important city of Aragua State. The city was founded in 1701, named after a local Indian chief, meaning “young tiger,” and experienced rapid development during the rule of Juan Vicente Gómez.
As one of the most important cities in Venezuela, Maracay is a key industrial and commercial center, producing paper, textiles, perfumes, soaps, and leather goods. In the northern part of Maracay, there are numerous high mountains which separate the city from the sea, forming Henri Pittier National Park. Established in 1937, the park covers an area of 1078 square kilometers, with its highest point reaching an altitude of 2436 meters, making it the most popular national park in Venezuela. Maracay Cathedral, Las Delicias Zoo, and Maracay Aviation Museum are also popular tourist destinations in the city.
